Announcement for the NSF CAREER Proposal Writing Workshop at the 2014 ASME IDETC conferences
Sponsored by the NSF Division of Civil, Mechanical and Manufacturing Innovation (CMMI), the 2014 NSF CAREER Proposal Writing Workshop will be held on August 19, 2014 in Buffalo, NY. The workshop has been scheduled as part of the ‘Design for Manufacturing and Life Cycle’ (DFMLC) Technical conference to equip PhD graduate students, postdoctoral fellows and junior faculty selected from the ASME Design Engineering Division (DED) community with formal training in both practical and conceptual aspects of the proposal-writing process and motivate workshop participants to use the networking opportunities available for them during the conference week.
The importance of career planning and instruction in writing successful grant applications for NSF CAREER development awards will be presented. Characteristics of successful CAREER development grant applications will be discussed including common mistakes to avoid, benefits of grant writing and awards, elements of a good proposal, how to write each individual component of the application, how to develop a responsive submission, and the NSF review process. While the focus of the workshop will be on NSF CAREER awards, the concepts presented will be applicable to most other funding sources that support career development.
